02 / THE WOMAN BEHIND THE CANVAS

She made a name.
Let’s remember it.

Born Matilda Goodman in Manchester, Maude trained in South Kensington and built a life in art in Victorian London. Her paintings travelled far beyond the exhibition room, reaching homes through prints, postcards and illustrated books.

A Jewish woman making her way in the Victorian art world, she is the subject of a continuing journey of discovery—one painting, one document, one detail at a time.

A beginning in Manchester

Born Matilda Goodman, the future artist would come to be known to her public as Maude.
